Athletes compete in Swimming during the Summer Games season (February - May) for Special Olympics Hawaii. Athletes compete in Swimming at Regional competitions (Oahu-wide, or Neighbor Island) to qualify for the State Summer Games held in May. Because of the wide array of events offered, Swimming is appropriate for a range of ages and ability levels. Swimming competition events range in distance from 25 to 200 yards and are offered in all four strokes, freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly, as well as Medley events and relays. Special Olympics Hawaii also offers events for lower ability level athletes to train and compete in basic swimming skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to longer competitive events. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.
