Bocce

Resources

Bocce is played during the Aukake Classic Season (June - August) AND the Holiday Classic Season (September - December) for Special Olympics Hawaii. Athletes compete in Bocce events at Regional (Oahu-wide) or Area competitions to qualify for the Aukake Classic in August or the Holiday Classic in December.

Bocce is a game of skill and strategy played on a 12ft. by 60 ft. court. (Usually grass) The object is for one team to get as many of their Bocce balls closer to the pallina (the smallest ball) than the opposing team's closest ball. In SOHI competition there are 2 players on a team. Each player is given two balls. Each player must then take turns delivering the ball toward the pallina ball, which has already been thrown onto the court. A team is given a point for each of their Bocce balls that is closer to the pallina than the opposing teams closest ball. Balls, including the pallina, may also be displaced by the balls of other players. Play continues until one team scores a certain amount of points, or a time limit has been reached.

Special Olympics Hawaii offers both Doubles and Unified® Doubles in both seasons. As in all Special Olympics sports, teams are placed in divisions according to ability, age and gender.
